Outsourcing 2D drafting at roughly $2 a drawing only looks cheap if you count the invoice and nothing else. What does outsourcing 2D drafting really cost?

The real cost of outsourcing 2D drafting is total turnaround and correctness, not the per-sheet fee. The fee is trivial. Everything around it is not.

If you make hardware and hate detailing, you have probably done the math one solo hardware founder walked us through. He builds everything in 3D, then sends the models out. “There’s a couple of companies overseas that take the 3D model and make me my ANSI drawings. I’ve been using them for 15 years. It’s about two bucks a drawing.”

Against an engineer’s hourly rate, $2 is unbeatable. As he put it, for his team it is about 10 minutes to make one of these drawings at the going rate, so doing it in-house “just doesn’t make sense.” On price alone, the trade looks settled. Why does the multi-day loop cost more than the invoice?

Because the invoice buys the drawing, but the calendar buys your schedule, and the calendar is where outsourced drafting bleeds.

“There’s a big time difference when I send it out. They’ll make the drawing, they’ll send it back, and that’s basically a full day. If there are any corrections, then it goes back and forth. So it ends up being a two to three day process to get a batch of drawings out.” A part you finished modeling on Monday is not ready to send to the shop until Thursday.

What gets lost in translation on an outsourced drawing?

The details that carry the most manufacturing intent are the ones that most reliably fail the handoff: surface finishes, notes, keyways, and welds.

Surface finish. Hard to communicate through the model alone, so it comes back wrong or missing.

Notes. When the person drafting does not share your first language, the note doesn’t translate exactly how you want it. A note is intent in plain words, and intent is the first thing a language gap drops.

Learn your explicit rules. Some conventions are simple and easy to capture. The bike manufacturer’s example: “the largest bore diameter is datum A.” Learn that one rule and the datum-setup step disappears for that family of parts.

Keyways and welds. A keyway you have to go back over once or twice is a nuisance. A weld call-out that always comes back as a full weld, when translation drops the size and type entirely, means the shop welds the wrong joint, the wrong size, the wrong way.

Every one of those is a defect that either bounces back for another round-trip or, worse, reaches the shop and gets made wrong. When information does not survive a handoff, someone downstream pays to reconstruct it.

A drawing is not paperwork. It is the contract between your design and the shop floor. A wrong weld symbol or a missing note is not a cosmetic error. It is a part that fails inspection, a line that stops, or a quote that balloons. Because a manufacturing drawing built for a machinist and a drawing built for an inspector are different documents for different readers, and an outsourced loop makes you pay for each one separately. His workflow surfaced a distinction that trips up a lot of teams: a manufacturing drawing tells the shop how to make the part, while an inspection drawing is organized around how the part will be measured, using the specific gauges, fixtures, and instruments the inspection team actually has.
